I walked into the small auditorium ten minutes before the seminar was scheduled to begin. I had searched for a picture of the elusive Jacob Ryan on my way but came up empty. It seemed he wasn’t one to take advantage of a photo-op. As the seats began to fill up, I searched frantically for something closer than the tenth row.

I had just resolved to the fact that I’d be sitting in the back, when a handsome man in the second row, waved me over.

“There’s an empty seat here,” he motioned to the chair beside him and flashed me a charming white smile.

“Thanks,” I returned a smile and slipped into the seat to his right.

“No problem. You just seemed so lost, searching for a seat all by yourself. Most people come with a publishing partner or someone.”

“Well, thanks for taking pity on me.” I chuckled. “My plus one couldn’t make it.”

“That’s alright. Mine bailed on me when he met a hot cocktail waitress last night.” He chuckled, showing there were no actual hard feelings. “We can fly solo together.”

“Are we really flying solo if we’re doing it together?” I teased and he laughed.

“You must be a fellow author. None of the stuffy publishers talk like that. I’m Jacob,” he offered me his hand and my heart stopped for a split second. It couldn’t be.

“You’re not Jacob Ryan, are you?” I spoke hesitantly as I shook his hand.

“You’ve heard of me?”

“Well, yeah. You’re kind of a big deal.”

“Eh. I’ve known me long enough to know I’m not really,” he waved his hand through the air in a nonchalant manner. “If you want to know the truth, it's all an act. I like to pretend I know what I’m doing but I’m just as lost as the rest of you. So, what do you write?”

“Oh, I’m actually one of those stuffy publishers you mentioned before.” I smiled sheepishly.

He cringed. “Damn, I’m going to need a crowbar to pry my foot out of my mouth, aren’t I?”

I couldn’t help but laugh. “It’s no big deal. I’m sure a lot of the publishing companies out there can come off a little stiff. Our publishing house is a little different though. We put aside a lot of that in exchange for our passion for a good story.”

“Oh, you must be with a small publisher then. They are the only ones that seem to talk about passion anymore.”

“We are one of the largest independent publishers, so I guess you were partially right there. But, we’re large enough that we have the resources to get the job done, and get it done well.”

“You sound very passionate about your business.”

“I am. Everyone who works at Reid Publishing has a legitimate love for the written word.”

“Reid Publishing? Really?”

“Oh, you’ve heard of us?”

We were interrupted by a man clearing his throat at the podium, “Good morning, everyone. And, thank you for joining us today. I hope you are all as excited as I am to discuss the ever-changing world of marketing.
